Pigeon Island

No trip to the Eastern holiday hot-spot of Trincomalee is complete if one fails to get a close look and feel of the finest reefs in Sri Lanka one finds there on Pigeon Island that is just 1km from the famous Nilaweli beach nearby. It’s a protected marine park of the island but travelers are not barred from visiting the island. Pigeon Island spreads over 470 hectares and the two land masses which make up the island are linked by a narrow strip of sand. The shallow waters of the bay prove to b e too much of a temptation and it’s a common sight to see dozens of families frolicking here at any time of the year. The more adventurous types venture further out for some snorkeling and diving. The marine population here amounts to about 300 different species of reef breeder fish and 100 species of fish to who the quite enormous spread of coral life is their natural habitat. The pigeons which live on Pigeon Island roost and breed on the scores of crags on the cliff face there. Their nests are often hidden in the crevices in the cliffs. Pigeon Island offers a unique opportunity to uncoil from all tensions in life with a rejuvenating couple of days simply lazing around in tempo with the settlers there. The large coral reef around the island is almost 200 meters long and 100 meters wide. A sign reading “Pigeon Island” points the way towards the roosting places of the pigeons where you hear the doleful cooing which can have a therapeutic effect. Once you reach the second sign that reads “Pigeons Eye Lookout” you are very close to their roosting places and looking down you get a bird’s eye view of them near at hand. The place has its very goodly share of bird life, with loads of unwelcome insects abounding everywhere while the reptiles one might also encounter are easily dwarfed by the dozens of endemic flowers which abound there. On Pigeon Island you’re quite thoroughly isolated though still within easy reach. Its only a days outing that’s likely to give you fond memories of a visit.
